YouTube Shorts monetization requirements in 2026

5 min read
Monetization requirements are set by YouTube and change — verify current numbers on YouTube's own Partner Program page before treating anything here as final. Accurate as of August 2026.

There are two ways into the YouTube Partner Program now, and Shorts views count toward both — you don't need a long-form back catalog to qualify anymore.

Expanded early access

  • 500 subscribers
  • 3 public video uploads in the last 90 days
  • Either 3,000 valid public watch hours in the last 12 months, or 3 million valid Shorts views in the last 90 days

Full monetization

  • 1,000 subscribers
  • Either 4,000 valid public watch hours in the last 12 months, or 10 million valid Shorts views in the last 90 days

You only need one of the two performance paths at each tier, not both — a channel doing well on Shorts specifically doesn't need long-form watch hours to qualify. Both tiers also require: no active Community Guidelines strikes, residency in a supported country, 2-Step Verification enabled, and an active AdSense account.

The part that actually trips creators up: originality

YouTube is explicit that channels built on "compilations of existing media," "reuploading other creators' content," or "undisclosed AI-generated content" without original commentary are unlikely to get approved — regardless of whether the numbers above are met. This is aimed squarely at content that isn't yours: reposted clips from someone else's show, fully synthetic AI-generated videos with no real source, low-effort compilations.

Turning your own recorded podcast episode or stream into Shorts is a different thing entirely — it's your original content, edited into a different format, the same way a highlight reel of your own game footage or a trailer for your own film is still your original work. The distinction YouTube is drawing is about whose content it is and whether there's real editorial judgment involved (picking the moment, framing it, captioning it), not about whether AI touched any step of the process.

Worth being transparent about regardless: if a platform or a viewer asks whether AI helped pick or edit a clip, saying so costs nothing and matches where this space is clearly heading. See how AI Clipping actually decides what's worth posting for exactly what the AI does and doesn't do in that process.

The practical path

If you already have long-form recordings sitting unused — a podcast, a stream VOD, a recorded interview — turning them into Shorts is the fastest realistic way to hit the Shorts-views path to either tier, since you're not starting from zero source material. See how to turn one podcast episode into a week of clips for the actual workflow, and TikTok vs. Reels vs. Shorts for what to change per platform once you're cutting for more than one at a time.
